5 Ways To Keep Your Feet Toasty & Warm This Winter

5 Ways To Prevent Your Feet Getting Cold

As the temperature plummets and the days grow shorter, it’s a good time to start thinking about how to keep our feet warm during outdoor exercise.

So, we’ve pulled together our ‘Top 5’ ways to help prevent your feet getting cold this winter, and have suggested five pairs of socks that will help keep you toasty.

  1. Thicker socks aren’t necessarily warmer

Don’t wear socks that are too thick for your shoes. If your sock is too thick, it can cause pressure on the foot, which in turn can cut circulation off to your toes. Your toes should be able to wiggle with your sock on your foot inside your shoe.

  1. Avoid cotton socks

Your feet sweat all the time, even when its cold. Cotton gets wet with sweat very quickly and doesn’t keep warm once wet. Opt for a technical fibre instead. Avoid-Cotton-Socks-Feetus-Winter-Blog

  1. Merino wool is your new best friend

This ‘magical’ fabric keeps your feet warm like no other! Merino wool is itch-free, thermostatic (temperature-regulating, making it idea for all weather; hot or cold) and offers superior moisture management.Merino-Wool-Feetus-Blog

  1. Liner socks

If your feet are always cold, try liner socks. It’s amazing just how much of an impact a thin liner sock can make. They’re also great to use as a day-to-day sock or as a lightweight sock for summer.

  1. Avoid Caffeine

A warm cup of tea or coffee may be just what you fancy, but caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, and causes your vessels to constrict, limiting blood flow to your extremities.Avoid-Caffeine-Feetus-BlogWinter-Socks

How Should My Vibram FiveFingers Fit?

Whether you plan to wear your Vibram Five Fingers for running, for hitting the gym or CrossFit training, for yoga or even just for everyday casual wear – getting the right size is paramount.

The Space: No More Half-Inch Wiggle

You will probably find that in your ‘conventional’ shoes, and by conventional I mean your smart work shoes, your daily casual footwear, or your standard Asics-type running shoe, you allow a bit of room. Typically known as a half-inch wiggle at the toes.

When wearing your FiveFingers, your feet should be able to flex naturally, with each toe being able to extend fully. It is completely fine for your toes to graze the end of the toe pockets.

If you find that when you wiggle your toes and they slip out of the toe pockets, you need to go down a size. Alternatively, if your toes are scrunched up when you extend them, you need to opt for a size larger.

Further, if your toes are already grazing the end of the shoes when you wear them in bare feet, yet you plan to wear Injinji toe socks under them – it is recommended that you go for a size bigger.

Ultimately, your pair should allow you to perform activities freely, comfortably and naturally – as though you were wearing no shoes at all!

Getting the right fit is essential
Getting the right fit is essential

True, you may find that some toes seem set back further than others. For example, I often find that my first two toes (the big toe and his neighbour) graze the end of my Vibrams, but the little toe has almost a full centimetre of room. This is completely fine. My toes can be fully extended, yet some toes graze the end while others have more room – but none of the toes are squashed nor do they fall out of the toe pockets.

So, to round it off, use these three points as a checklist to ensure your FiveFingers fit OK:

  1. My toes can extend fully
  2. My toes ARE NOT scrunched up inside the toe pockets
  3. My toes DO NOT fall out of the toe pockets when I wiggle them
